Stabio

The commune is situated between vast fields and some low hills. Ancient artefacts, such as Etruscan and Roman gravestones, Roman sepulchres, weapons and coins, and a Longobard shield, all confirm the presence of Roman and pre-Roman civilization. In fact, Stabio was clearly the Roman capital of the Mendrisiotto, and the region’s first and most important centre of influence.
Among the historical figures we should point out Monsignor Della Casa, with family origins in this village, although he was born in Rome in 1754, and was elected Bishop of Alatri in 1800 under Pope Pius V11; also the sculptor Natale Albisetti.
