Intro

A trip on the High Rhine from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein and on the Lower Lake to Konstanz/Kreuzlingen. Board the boat in Schaffhausen at the foot of the Munot fortress and pass by Hohenklingen castle and Reichenau, an island of culture and vegetable growing, before reaching Lake Constance on the upper shores of the Lower Lake.

The popular Untersee-Rhine cruise from Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen is 50 kilometres in length; it lasts nearly 5 hours. At the Lower Lake, the south-western corner of Lake Constance, the Rhine leaves Lake Constance. The fleet of the Lower Lake and Rhine Shipping Company comprises six smart motor vessels of different sizes. In addition to regular scheduled trips, special additional trips are also offered – such as a romantic sunset cruise with an aperitif, trips to Schaffhausen with a connecting visit to the imposing Rhine Falls, and cruises combined with a fine meal in a fish restaurant. The boat trips can be combined with a bicycle tour or a walk. The boats operate daily from April to October.

The circular Munot fortress, constructed in the late Middle Ages, is regarded as the landmark of Schaffhausen. Reminders of the medieval period can also be found in the old town: for example the All Saints’ Minster and its museum, as well as the picturesque alleys, town squares and houses decorated with numerous oriel windows. Near Schaffhausen, Europe’s largest waterfall, the Rhine Falls, offer an impressive natural spectacle. Here, across a width of around 150 metres, the Rhine roars thunderously over the rocks and then down 21 metres into the depths below.

The river section between Schaffhausen and the well-maintained small mediaeval town of Stein am Rhein, with its frescoes and painted houses, is particularly charming. A stroll through the historic alleyways to the ‘Rathausplatz’ (town hall square) with its painted building facades and a visit to the museum of St. George’s Abbey are both well worthwhile. Hohenklingen castle is situated above the small town.
