Intro

In 1938, due to the increase in skiing tourism, the club members of Ticino’s SAC Section find the time ripe for a hut in the Cristallina area.

Description

On November 4th in the first year of the war, the hut is completed. It boasts 80 bunks, and with its warm air heating and four WC’s it is more comfortable than many a house down in the valley. But it is only inaugurated in 1942, amidst military precautions. In 1986, an avalanche of dry, loose snow damages the building heavily, the snow mass makes the roof collapse. Reconstruction is started immediately and the size of the hut is increased to 160 bunks. In February 1999 no less than two dust avalanches descend upon the hut and destroy it completely. It is a miracle that by chance no one was in the hut. The Cristallina Hut is rebuilt. This time at a location 200 meters higher, which should be safer.

Man will always be a stranger in the high mountains. But in the new Cristallina Hut this strangeness is very comfortable, airy, spacious and warm. The hut carries the fame of the avant-garde Ticinese architecture high up into the mountains and causes a stir far beyond the circles in architecture.Cristallinahütte: Die Avantgarde im Hochgebirge.
