On 14 July 1865 Edward Whymper started out at Hotel Monte Rosa for the first ascent of the Matternhorn. The oldest hotel in Zermatt has always been part of alpine history and it still is. It used to be a chalet, but in the Belle Epoque it grew into a sophisticated luxury hotel with worldwide appeal.
