Description
Yverdon-les-Bains lies between the Jura, the Broye hills and Lake Neuchâtel. Known as the most important spa resort in French-speaking Switzerland, the city attracts visitors with its historic Yverdon Castle, once the residence of the Counts of Savoy.
The vast nature reserve of the Grande Cariçaie extends along the entire southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel. Covering an area of almost 3,000 hectares, it provides a habitat for a variety of plant and animal species, which corresponds to around a quarter of Switzerland's flora and fauna. The bike path first leads to Grandson. The medieval castle from the 11th to 14th centuries towers over Lake Neuchâtel and is home to a remarkable collection of weapons and armour as well as models of the castle. The exhibition also gives you a wealth of interesting facts about the famous Battle of Grandson in around 1476, in which the Confederates faced Charles the Bold.
The trail continues to the municipality of Concise via the industrial area of La Poissine. The village is located at the southern foot of the Jura and is one of the typical wine-growing villages of this region. During excavation work for the Yverdon-Neuchâtel railway line from 1859, archaeological sites were discovered in the municipality of Concise, including riverside settlements such as La Raisse and La Lance, with objects from the period from 3850 BC. In the Middle Ages, Concise was dependent upon various rulers. Part of the Grandson district since 1798, Concise developed into a centre of viticulture and alpine farming from the 1960s onwards. Located close to the water, the church of Concise shows off its pleasantest side.
The route continues along roads through vineyards and offers lake views in the municipality of La Grand Béroche in the canton of Neuchâtel, which consists of several historic villages.
The cycle path then leads from Bôle through a wooded section to the destination for this stage, Corcelles, in the canton of Neuchâtel. The municipality was long characterised by various power structures and industrial settlements after the construction of the Corcelles-Peseux train station from 1859 to 1860 transformed it into a small town. It is now part of the conurbation of Neuchâtel.
