Intro
The path across the Gotthard Pass leads through the dangerous Schöllenen Gorge with its steep walls and wild river. Here the French fought against the Russians over two hundred years ago. The Suworow Monument commemorates the fallen.
There is no way around the Schöllenen Gorge, famous for its beautiful wilderness. The inhabitants of Urserental built the steps, the footbridges and paths with their own hands. As legend has it, they only needed help for the construction of the bridge. It was the devil who offered help, but luckily he could be outwitted.
The Gotthard route remained important even in the years that followed. In 1799 Napoleon's troops fought their hardest battle against the Russians - who were commanded by General Suworow - on the Devil's Bridge. The Suworow Monument, which is carved into the rocks of the Schöllenen Gorge, commemorates the fallen Russian soldiers. In 2009 Dmitri Medvedev, the Russian President, visited the monument on the occasion of his official visit.
