Abbey Church Romainmôtier
Overview
Intro
Churches built over a period of 1000 years, frescoes, tombs, splendid halls and Gothic columns: the Abbey of Romainmôtier and the House of the Prior mirror the changes that faith and church underwent. They also reflect the timelessness of beautiful buildings.
The Abbey of Romainmôtier was built between 990 and 1030, according to the plans of the church of Cluny, and on the ruins of a monastery dating back to the 5th and 7th century. The church is one of the oldest Romanesque buildings in Switzerland and houses an early form of the pulpit from the 8th century. The 14th century frescoes and the 15th century choir chairs are also worth seeing.
The 13th century House of the Prior of Romainmôtier is located next to the Abbey. The house with its magnificent halls, large fireplaces, coffered ceilings and wall paintings was fully restored and can now be reserved for parties and banquets.
