Johanna Spyri Museum
Overview
Intro
It is not only Heidi’s world, but also that of her creator that you get to know in Zürich’s Hirzel. This is where the little Johanna Louise Heusser went to school. Since 1981 the Johanna Spyri Museum has been located in the “Old School House”.
When Johanna Spyri wrote the Heidi books, she was already 53 years old. She had published her first stories just nine years earlier. More than a century later, children from all corners of the globe still devour her books. The author even in her wildest dreams could never have imagined this success.
What causes the Heidi fascination? What moved the daughter of a respectable family to totally identify with the child? To portray the prevalent morality of the day? Answers to this and other interesting questions regarding the Heidi phenomenon can be found in the Johanna Spyri Museum in Hirzel. Once upon a time the author studied in the “Alte Schulhaus” dating from 1660. Documents, pictures and other testimonies convey a vivid impression of her life and writings.
