Discovering a cultural marvel while hiking – on Monte Tamaro, you can do just that. The popular mountain destination for excursions near Lugano promises a spectacular panoramic view in combination with art, culture and adventure.
Even the journey up by cable car is an experience in itself. The cable car climbs around 1,100 metres in altitude to Alpe Foppa. Once at the top, a wide range of activities can be enjoyed. From an adrenaline kick on the zip wire or the toboggan run to gastronomic delights in the Restaurant Alpe Foppa, and right through to art and culture in unique surroundings, it’s all here. So there’s something here for everyone.
At the upper station, a special building catches the eye. This is the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built by the Ticino architect Mario Botta. Situated on the edge of a slope, the church, which is built of porphyry, offers an exceptional panoramic view. The interior of the church may also impress: the artistic design by Enzo Cucchi covers the two main rooms as well as a series of panels with Marian motifs above the windows.
The church is also the starting point for a wide range of hikes of varying length and difficulty. To make sure you don’t get hungry along the way, every Sunday you can pick up a brunch to go at the Restaurant Alpe Foppa. This not only tastes good, but also consists exclusively of regional products. Thanks to the practical, 100% organic cotton backpack, the brunch can be enjoyed anywhere.
For art lovers, the approximately 20-minute Artistic Walk is well worthwhile. This combines nature and culture and leads past various art installations. If you are looking for a greater challenge, take one of the circular hikes or the summit hike up to Monte Tamaro. What all the hikes have in common are the breathtaking views and moments of peace and tranquillity.
How to get there: From Lugano, take the train (which takes half an hour) to the “Rivera-Bironico” station. The valley station is around 10 minutes’ walk from the station.
