Alpine Panorama Trail
Overview
Intro
The rather long ascent from Stein to the Vorderen Höhe is finally rewarded with wonderful views of the Glarner mountain peaks. A diverse high-level hike leads around the Gulmen, across to the Mattstock and down to Amden.
Description
Amden is surrounded by extensive, unspoilt landscape with a wide range of flora and fauna. The sun terrace above Lake Walen is considered an important area for rest and recreation – for both people and animals.
After leaving the village, you descend through meadows towards Weesen. At the hairpin bend on the main road, the route switches to a historic stairway. At one time, this was the main route up to Amden. More than 100 steps take you up to sometimes dizzying heights around the Chappeli rocky outcrop. After leaving the stone steps behind, you reach the shores of Lake Walen and the first rows of houses in Weesen. The village is nestled between the lake and the Churfirsten mountain range. As Weesen is south-facing, it has an almost Mediterranean climate, meaning that grapevines, palms and fig and lemon trees grow here.
Now begins the leisurely stretch: you walk alongside the Linth Canal to Ziegelbrücke. This man-made watercourse joins Lake Walen to Lake Zurich. It was built in the 19th century to prevent flooding in Glarus and the Linth region. It is now also used to generate electricity and for recreation. Floating from Weesen down to Schmerikon in a dinghy is particularly popular.
Once you arrive in Ziegelbrücke, the route forks left. You walk on flat terrain along the edge of the forest via Niederurnen and past Bilten and Reichenburg. The beautiful Hirschlensee lake is an inviting place to take a break. It’s then around another two-and-a-half hours to the destination of this long stage in Siebnen. This village in Schwyz lies at the entrance to the Wägital valley, close to the upper part of Lake Zurich and the Linth plain.
