Intro
The route over the hills at the very end of Val Terbi climbs up to Welschgätterli. The rocky mountain pass also forms the language border. The panoramic views of the Delémont Valley and the Basel and Solothurn regions are incredible. Several picnic areas along the way are perfect for a break.
Description
Val Terbi with its small agricultural villages is located east of Delémont. Montsevelier, near the end of the valley, extends along the creek of the same name. The church of St. George in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style is a beautiful sight to see and this is where the route starts. It follows a path up to the edge of the forest where it becomes narrow and steep and snakes its way up to Welschgätterli. The rocky pass between Canton Solothurn and Canton Jura forms the border between German- and French-speaking Switzerland. The picnic area with tables is a nice place for a break.
From there the route follows the ridge in the forest. The pathways through the rocks have been used to cross the Jura Mountains since the olden times. In the 1980s, some of the farmers found shards of clay in their fields which prove that the area had been populated as early as the 7th century. Up on the hills, a beaten path leads across the delightful pasture of La Chèvre with views of Val Terbi. The route continues along the edge of the forest, past the Greierlet farm and uphill across the meadows to the Champre farm. The views from there across the Delémont Valley on one side and the Basel area on the other are splendid.
From Le Champre, the highest point of the route, a small path leads down to the village of Mervelier, located at the very end of Val Terbi. The trail through the forest is sometimes slippery and some parts are steep. In spring, the scent of wild garlic is in the air here, which grows on the side of the trail. Mervelier was built along the main road like a ribbon and along Scheltenbach creek, which carries the water in western direction to the Birs river. The route turns on the outskirts of the village and follows a path through the fields with unobstructed views of Val Terbi and the valley. With the Jura Mountains as a backdrop, the path returns to Montsevelier.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
