Emmental
Overview
Intro
The Emmental is a region in Canton Bern, home to the famous eponymous cheese with the large holes. Life is a tranquil affair among these hills, which give every appearance of belonging to a different era. By way of discovering them, this short loop chooses roads with little traffic.
Description
On departing from Langnau, you leave the main road and head towards Emmenmatt before tackling the Moosegg and climbing to alt. 1000m over 4km, an average gradient of 7.5%. You immediately find yourself in typical Emmental scenery characterised by low yet steep hills interspersed with woods and meadows, with the Bernese Alps in the background.
Following a short descent, you take a left a little before Arni for another ascent as short as it is steep (13%). You then come back down towards Zäziwil and Bowil at the foot of the next challenge that heads towards Chuderhüsi (alt. 1110m).
During the climb, you cannot fail to admire the quintessential Emmental farms: large timber edifices decorated with flowers, their imposing roofs sweeping low either side.
The summit boasts a restaurant, perfect for a welcome rest. A rapid descent brings you to the main road at Röthenbach; the final test of stamina starts at Eggiwil at km 37 and ends at Hinterblapbach at alt. 1145m.
Langnau is at the end of a descent on a narrow road followed by a final section along the Ilfis river.
