Grand Tour des Vanils hike
Duration 7 h
Hike through the typical countryside of the Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut Regional Nature Park over 11 days: over Alpine meadows and peaks, through villages and forests.
Newly waymarked in 2018, the 11 daily stages of this hike pass through the Gruyère Pays d’Enhaut Regional Nature Park. This region is the birthplace of Gruyère AOP and Étivaz AOP and offers unique experiences in nature, not to mention an insight into the fascinating world of Alpine herdsmen. The 157-kilometre multi-day hike boasts breathtaking panoramic views of valleys and lakes, the Alps, Swiss Plateau and Jura.
“Vanil” means “rock” or “rocky mountain peak” in Fribourg patois. Many of these striking mountain peaks line the route in the nature park between the famous Vanil Noir, the highest mountain in the Fribourg Prealps, and the Vanil Carré in Châteaux-d’Oex (Canton Vaud). The route connects up diverse pre-Alpine landscapes of outstanding natural beauty. Active alpine farming, restaurants and mountain inns also promise amazing experiences. The hike is suitable for experienced mountain hikers (sure-footed and with a good head for heights). Although the stages are estimated at an average of fewer than six hours per day, hikers are advised to prepare well for this hike Public transport offers great flexibility. You can spend the night in mountain huts, guestrooms or hotels along the route.
