Monte Generoso circular hike
Distance 5 km
Duration 2 h 4 min
Ascent 425 m
Monte Generoso spoils hikers with a 360° panorama. An additional highlight on the short circular hike are the 11 “nevère” – cylindrical stone constructions that were once used to chill foods.
Hikers take the cog railway, which opened back in 1890, at Capolago-Riva San Vitale by Lake Lugano to climb the steep slopes of Monte Generoso. The 1,700m peak offers one of the most impressive panoramas in Switzerland. The view sweeps across towards the Alps and takes in northern Italy, the lakes region and the Alpine chain.
The circular hike leads from the summit station to Monte Generoso summit, Alp Nadigh and Alp Génor. Farmers live in old “rustici” huts here in summer. A unique feature of Monte Generoso is the presence of nevère, 11 of which can be seen on the circular hike. These are cold storage huts which farmers in Ticino used in earlier times to keep their milk cool for making cheese and butter. Eleven nevère – the predecessors of modern fridges – can be discovered on the round trip. These are cylindrical stone constructions in which farmers used to keep milk before processing it into butter and cheese.
The path then leads from the upper railway station along the eastern ridge to Alpe di Nadigh, before continuing on flat ground to the Alpe di Génor. From there, there is a slight ascent to the railway station, where the local train awaits for the descent to Capolago.
