Hint

Intro

This winter walk is the most popular one in the Vals valley, which is no surprise, as the water is reached effortlessly across open, snow-covered moorland. Walkers are accompanied all the way by stunning, Alpine scenery, which culminates in the Zervreilahorn – also known as the Matterhorn of the Grisons.

Description

Easy walking and grand views characterise this hiking trail through the Vals valley to the Zervreila reservoir. Through the snowy moorland landscape along the way, walkers can enjoy fabulous views of the mountains on the opposite side of the valley: the Fanellhorn, Guraletschhorn and Ampervreilhorn. Above them rises the Dachberg, with its perfect conditions for skiers and off-pisters alike. Passing numerous mountain streams, the route is lined with ideally located benches for enjoying the mountain streams and taking a breather.

The prepared track undulates gently on the sunny side of the valley to the Vals hamlet of Frunt (1,990 m above sea level). Well worth a visit is the Chapel of St Anna, built in 1754, that sits precariously at the very edge of a rock face. From here is a wonderful view over the Zervreila reservoir. At the far end of the reservoir towers the Zervreilahorn (2,821 m.a.s.l.), which is also known as the Matterhorn of the Grisons, thanks to its prominently pyramid-shaped peak. A short, steep uphill climb to the dam wall then follows. It’s interesting to note that the mountain hamlet of Zervreila existed here until 1957, when it disappeared off the map with the flooding of the valley behind the 151-metre-high, curved dam wall. Nowadays, the hydropower station provides sustainable electricity.

The walk crosses the dam wall and follows the road to the car park for the Zervreila Restaurant. Tip for the return to Vals: instead of taking the shuttle bus, why not do the seven-or-so kilometres on runners. Sledges are available from the restaurant.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
