Schweizer Zollmuseum
Overview
Intro
Smuggling, drug enforcement, financial crime, migration, precious metal control, species and cultural asset protection – visitors to the Customs Museum gain an insight into the everyday work of border guards and customs officers in Switzerland, from the foundation of the Confederation in 1848 to the present day.
Accessible only by ship or boat, standing on the shore of Lake Lugano and surrounded by lush greenery – an exclusive location for a museum and a site not without its symbolism. The Swiss Customs Museum was founded in 1935 in a barracks formerly used by the border guards at the frontier in Cantine di Gandria. Controlling frontiers has a long tradition in the small and independent alpine republic of Switzerland. This topic is naturally addressed by the Customs Museum, in addition to the contemporary challenges faced by the customs staff in Switzerland in the era of open borders in Europe and global trade.
Self-explanatory installations and any number of short films guide the visitors through the topics in an interesting and appealing way. There are regular special exhibitions on topical themes, often in collaboration with other institutions.
Information
The museum is located on the lakeshore opposite Gandria in “Cantine di Gandria”, right on the rural border with Italy. It can only be accessed by ship or passenger boat from Lugano or Gandria. Open every afternoon from mid-April to mid-October. Guided tours possible.
