ViaRomana - Myth and reality of the Roman roads
Overview
Intro
Route: Geneva - Lausanne - Orbe - Avenches - Solothurn - Augst
Almost two-thousand years after its prime the fascination of Roman building techniques and culture lives on. Thanks to new excavations and research it has become much easier to separate myth from reality. Along idyllic Roman roads, real and imagined, the ViaRomana links the most important Roman sites in Switzerland. It spells out the Roman culture with all its facets.
In eleven legs accomplished in eleven days, the ViaRomana path leads from Geneva to Augst via the Three-Lakes region. And between Avenches and Augst you get to see genuine Roman roads (Grosse Moos arch) as well as tracks from the early New Age, long thought to be Roman (St. Wolfgang, Oberer Hauenstein).
