A route where you can admire the imposing “tongue” of the Aletsch Glacier with little effort – this wide winter hiking trail from Belalp mountain station to Aletschbord via Bruchegg makes it possible. No less impressive are the views stretching from the Mischabel Group to the Matterhorn.
The tourist destination of Belalp is located on a terrace on the southern flank of the Unterbächhorn and the Sparrhorn. From Belalp mountain station (2,094 metres above sea level), this wide connecting path passes through Bruchegg and continues to Aletschbord (2,130 metres above sea level). Once you’ve arrived in Aletschbord, it’s worth taking a lengthy break for the panoramic backdrop alone – the views of the Great Aletsch Glacier, the Matterhorn and the numerous Valais three- and four-thousand-metre peaks are unparalleled. The Great Aletsch Glacier belongs to the UNESCO Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site. In terms of area, it is the largest and longest glacier in the Alps (22.75 kilometres).
Another imposing sight is Hotel Belalp, built in the style of the Belle Époque. Opened in 1858, back then it was predominantly visited by guests from England. You will inevitably come across the name John Tyndall on your hike. The Irish scientist and alpinist spent 44 summers on Belalp, during which he researched glacier movements. The hotel still has a John Tyndall room in its original style. A little above the hotel, there is a memorial dedicated to the researcher.
Before the return journey along the same path you can enjoy local specialities on the Hotel Belalp panoramic terrace and soak up the sun. Going back towards the mountain station, there is an alternative route between Lüsga and the Hotel Sparrhorn that passes through somewhat further down.
