Intro

The second section of the Emmenuferweg is also the most rugged. From Sörenberg the hiking trail meanders along deep ravines and high cliffs down to Schüpfheim in the main valley of the Entlebuch.

Description

The route begins in the middle of the peaceful village of Sörenberg. After just a few steps you leave the village centre behind and reach the Waldemme. To the sound of the burbling river, you continue through riverside landscapes, past protected moor biotopes and discover the amazing flora and fauna of the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch. After a short passage along the banks of the river, you arrive at the Birkenhof farm, nestled between forest islands, hedges and dry meadows. It has an attractive farm shop where you can purchase culinary delicacies from the region.

Shortly thereafter, you enter the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch, a virtual treasure chamber. At Junkholz you are in the midst of a flat moor of national importance. Moorlands in Switzerland are some of the rarest and most valuable habitats. Nowhere in Switzerland will you find so many nationally protected moor biotopes within such a small area as in the Entlebuch. About 25 percent of the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch is covered by moorlands, a total of 46 upland and transitional moors as well as 68 flat moors of national importance. The views in the spring are particularly attractive, when the flat moors are in full bloom, the meadows are bursting with fluffy cotton grass and purple-pinkish orchids are flourishing.

Through lovely riverside forests the hiking trail continues along the banks of the Waldemme until you reach Flühli. The section between the Hirsegg bridge and the village of Flühli is a special highlight for the kids with various playful water encounters and a water playground to look forward to. In Flühli the air smells of freshly mown grass. Past meadows and the typical scattered settlements of the Entlebuch the path leads to Chrutacher bridge and the entrance to the spectacular Lammschlucht gorge just a short while later. The water of the Waldemme rushes down between steep cliffs here. This area is particularly striking in autumn, when the foliage is in full colour.

The trail continues on a narrow gravel path along the riverbanks to Schüpfheim. For those who still have the energy, there is a large playground with grilling stations in the Sagenwäldli, just before the end of today’s tour.
