Val d’Hérens: Winter for every taste.
Overview
Intro
Snow-covered forests, rustic mountain villages and a unique alpine panorama – Val d’Hérens is a true winter paradise. Whether cross-country skiing or enjoying a dog sled tour, here you can really make the most of the coldest season of the year out in the diversity of nature.
“Something to suit every taste”. This is what the Val d’Hérens promises its guests. And it is sure to keep its promise. In the small side valleys of the region, winter fans will find a whole host of different activities in the snow. A special highlight is the cross-country ski trails, which are among the most beautiful in Central Valais. At three locations, over 66 kilometres of trails in total are waiting to be discovered. They lead through breathtaking landscapes and offer the right route for every level. With a spectacular view of the Grande Dixence, the largest gravity dam in the world, laps can be made at Pralong near Héremence. Guests will find the best snow conditions on the cross-country ski trails in Arolla. In the midst of mountains and glaciers, cross-country skiing can be enjoyed here at 2,000 metres up until spring. But also the extensive cross-country ski trails between Evolène and Les Haudères offer excellent conditions throughout the entire season thanks to their snow-making facilities. Cross-country skiing at night is even possible every evening on an illuminated section near Les Haudères.
Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can explore the winter wonderland on a dog sled or on a walk together with the trusting four-legged friends.
In the Evolène region as well as in Héremence and St. Martin, a range of husky experiences are offered, which are professionally accompanied by dog sled guides, known as “mushers”. Violaine Grau, world champion and multiple Swiss champion, and Sébastien Moix, a young musher from the valley, bring you closer to this kind of sport with plenty of passion. During an introductory course in “mushing”, you can practice your first moves and even steer the sleds yourself.
The eventful day in the snow-covered natural landscape can best be brought to an enjoyable end with a dinner. The traditional restaurants of the Val d’Hérens offer classic, regional dishes. For example, the Valais Raclette, known beyond the borders of the country, which is freshly melted on an open fire.
How to get there: Héremence, Saint-Martin, Evolène and Les Haudères can be easily reached by bus from Sion train station. To get to Arolla, change trains at Les Haudères.
