Intro

At an altitude of 2,757 metres, this mountain lake sits below the Matterhorn at the foot of the Gorner Ridge in Zermatt. The lake is best known for its mirror surface, which reflects the beautiful Matterhorn. This is a popular spot that’s easily accessible thanks to its location right next to the middle station of the Gornergrat mountain railway, which is a vantage point offering spectacular views.

Riffelsee at a glance

Lake Riffelsee is located at the valley station of the Gornergrat, which is renowned for its magnificent panoramic views of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, Switzerland's highest mountain with the Dufourspitze. The lake is famous for the “upside-down Matterhorn”, which is reflected in the lake surface.

The mountain lake can be reached by hiking from Rotenboden station. Those who prefer a more leisurely stroll can walk downhill from the Gornergrat Station or walk up to the Riffelberg. Both walks take about 30 to 50 minutes and are particularly popular with beginners.

In summer, you can even admire the sunrise in the early morning, starting the day with breakfast on the Gornergrat and then hiking to Lake Riffelsee.
