To the queen of the mountains
Distance 4 km
Duration 1 h 25 min
Ascent 374 m
The view sweeps over the Swiss Plateau as far as the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Alps. There are also breathtaking vistas of the majestic lakes of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug.
Queen of the mountains – these are the words you’ll see in brochures advertising Rigi Railways. The majestic view from Kulm certainly certainly lives up to the name. From here, you can see all the large lakes of Central Switzerland. The view of the Alps stretches from Säntis via Titlis and Pilatus to the western Swiss Alps.
From Rigi-Kaltbad you first follow a wide trail westwards to the Chänzeli viewpoint. From here, you get a fantastic view of Lake Lucerne and the city of Lucerne, framed by Mount Pilatus. Queen Victoria of England praised the spectacular all-round view when she visited here in 1868.
You then follow the ridge uphill to the peak of the mountain, also known as Rigi Kulm. From Rigi Staffel, the route runs more or less parallel to the train tracks of the cog railways that travel to the peak from Viznau and Goldau.
Note: Those who prefer to walk downhill should start the ridge hike from Rigi Kulm.
