Guggistafel Trail
Overview
Intro
This tour is ideal for snowshoe trekkers out for pleasure: the trail follows the river Lonza, with no steep gradients. From Kühmatt, the destination for pilgrimages in this region, it leads to Guggistafel – a quaint hamlet at the furthermost end of the remote Lötschental Valley.
Description
The Lötschental is a tributary valley of the Rhone Valley. The people here have kept their own distinctive dialect which – as you can hear – differs from Walliser German (or "Wallisertiitsch"). During the February carnival period, giant masked figures ("Tschäggätä") rampage through the villages, making them unsafe. And in recent winters, wolves have also been known to creep around the houses …
The Guggistafel Trail begins in Blatten, the principal village in this valley. It starts out along the right-hand bank of the river Lonza. The route climbs gently through the forest, and then crosses open terrain. At Kühmatt, a destination for pilgrims, the trail leads across a bridge over the Lonza. The baroque Chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary has stood in this uninhabited spot since 1654. The trail now follows the left bank of the river and becomes somewhat steeper below the Hotel Fafleralp. It leaves the valley floor at Gletscherstafel hamlet, and climbs leftwards up to the settlement of Guggistafel, this tour's highest point (1,920 m.a.s.l.) With its ancient Valais barns and a vista encompassing almost the entire Lötschental Valley, this is a tempting spot for a rest.
From here, the route ascends rather more steeply over the Gletscherflue formation, and then continues to Gletscherstafel settlement. The trail ascends briefly and traverses a forest to reach the Hotel Fafleralp, located in an idyllic forest clearing. You descend gently from here, always heading straight ahead as far as Kühmatt, and then you cross almost flat terrain on the right-hand bank of the river until you reach Eisten hamlet. Blatten – the tour's destination – is visible again from here.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
