Lauterbrunnen-Loipe
Overview
Intro
Cross-country skiing in the valley with 72 waterfalls, surrounded by several peaks over three or four thousand metres high. The trail runs along the White Lütschine from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, past the Trümmelbach Falls, the biggest underground waterfalls in Europe.
Description
The alpine topography naturally does not leave much room for Nordic cross-country skiing. However, this trail is at the bottom of the valley between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. And it is spectacular: The path between the two mountain villages is lined with 72 waterfalls. The trail constantly follows the White Lütschine, passing the icy cascades.
A highlight is the Trümmelbach Falls, which you pass in one of the loops. Its name describes the loud drumming sound sometimes made by these waterfalls, which are the largest underground waterfalls in Europe. In winter, it is slightly quieter because of the ice, and the Trümmelbach Falls drain the glacial walls of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Just before reaching the end of the trail, you will pass the Mürrenbach Falls. This holds another record: The body of water falls in five cascades over 417 metres into the depth. This makes it the highest waterfall in Switzerland.
The trail finally ends at the rear of the Lauterbrunnen valley, in the little village of Stechelberg. The end of the valley is a large nature reserve and is part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stechelberg is the starting point for various mountain tours.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
