Summer on Monte San Giorgio
Overview
Intro
What could be better on a hot summer’s day in the Mendrisiotto region than an excursion to Monte San Giorgio? Day-trippers can explore the mountain on the Sentiero del Monte San Giorgio circular route. For a more leisurely visit, the cable car makes the ascent easier. Whether you arrive on foot or by cable car, an exceptionally beautiful panorama awaits visitors on the summit.
The Mendrisiotto, the southernmost region of Switzerland, is characterised by its diversity. An excursion to Monte San Giorgio is particularly worthwhile. It has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2003. Once forming an ocean basin, Monte San Giorgio later rose like a pyramid from Lake Lugano. Over 240 million ancient fossils are hidden in the mountain.
Leaving from Brusino Arsizio, a cable car will carry passengers from Lake Lugano to Serpiano. For those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, the ascent to the summit can be made from several sides. The Sentiero del Monte San Giorgio circular hike is particularly worthwhile. The path leads through shady forests past the highlights of the region on its way to the summit. The effort demanded by the climb will be rewarded: the view from Monte San Giorgio over Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains such as Monte San Salvatore and Monte Generoso is impressive. Refreshments can be obtained in the small hut next to the chapel, where a small selection of drinks is available. Payment is made through a slot in the stone wall.
A visit to the nearby Meride is recommended. This affords the chance to wonder at some of the most important finds in the Fossil Museum. But the picturesque village itself is also a sight to behold. The mediaeval village with cobbled streets is at the foot of Monte San Giorgio and surrounded by vineyards. The small, but well-preserved, historic village centre invites you to explore its pleasures.
Bring the day to an end with an aperitif or dinner in the Porto Pojana Ristorante Terminus. Culinary delights are guaranteed right on the shore of Lake Lugano: the cuisine, specialising in seafood, enchants visitors with stylishly prepared menus that will delight any gourmet.
