Intro
This picturesque circular route by the railway village of Göschenen takes you along the Reuss tributary and the Bitziwald. Its low gradient makes it a pleasure for inexperienced snowshoe hikers too.
Description
Lonely winter landscapes and a fairytale forest lure you onto this snowshoe trail that runs towards Göscheneralp. The starting point is at the railway village of Göschenen. The village has been an important transit point for traffic on the north-south axis, especially in earlier times. This community at the exit of the Schöllenen Gorge had its highpoint in the 1960s when, with the railway, army and power plant, it had about 1,600 inhabitants. Today there are less than 500.
The simple snowshoe trail starts near the Göschenen hydroelectric power plant, which can be visited by appointment. It first goes along the Göschenerreuss, a tributary of the Reuss, which rises at the Chelen Glacier. Of special note is the chapel on the other side of the river at the idyllic hamlet of Abfrutt. It is dedicated to St Matthew, the patron saint of avalanches, and was first built in 1608. In 1880 it was replaced by a larger one and is located just before the turning point of the tour.
On the way back through the snow-covered Bitziwald, you reach the highest point above Ängi (1,194 m above sea level). Finally, you go downhill again: gently at first and then, after a hairpin turn, the downward gradient gets steeper before you reach the end by the hydroelectric power plant.
