Hochalp Trail
Overview
Intro
The Hochalp peak in the Appenzell region is a popular tourist destination, affording splendid views of the snow-covered hills and Mount Säntis.
Description
The route up to the Hochalp takes you first through the woods and then over the hills, climbing some 340 metres. Start and finish is the Bruggerenwald forest.
The trail first takes you past the coniferous forest and Alp Fildi peak. The terrain then gradually opens up and highest point of the trail comes into view: the mountain inn and stables on the Hochalp. Mount Säntis rises up before the snowshoe hiker, while Lake Constance and the Fürstenland region spread out below. At the crest (eastern Hochalp) the highest point has been reached – time to catch your breath, and also to take in the panorama: the Alpstein, the jagged Churfirsten, the Stockberg and the Speer are all in sight.
Continuing along the ridge, it only takes a few more minutes to reach the rustic mountain inn on the Hochalp. The inn has no regular opening hours in winter (please call before the tour). Taking a rest before beginning your descent, let your gaze sweep across the broad vista of the Appenzell hills. Zigzagging downward, you’ll reach the Alp Nasen, and shortly thereafter the prepared toboggan run, continuing on through the Bruggerenwald forest to return to the starting point.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
