Chemin d’Ossona
Overview
Intro
Hike between Les Prixes and La Luette with a spectacular passage across the 133 m Grande Combe suspension bridge. Just before the bridge is the hamlet of Ossona on a plateau in the heart of the Val d’Hérens, a showcase project for gentle and sustainable agritourism.
Description
The hike starts in Les Prixes and first leads downhill through the forest. It then follows an undulating trail before the forest gets lighter and the route crosses the Manna River, situated near the authentic hamlet of Ossona. This is a showcase project for gentle and sustainable agritourism. It didn’t always look as charming as it does now. The last families and their cattle began to drift away permanently in the 1960s. The Alpine huts were left to fall apart and nature reclaimed its terrain. All this changed in 2005: The municipality of Saint-Martin decided to invest in an agritourism centre with financial support from the federal and the cantonal government. Disintegrated stables were renovated or rebuilt as inns. Today, Ossona has a cheese cellar, a solar system, and dairy cows and goats are grazing on the pastures. The restaurant serves local products. It also offers overnight accommodations and anybody interested is welcome to help with the work.
After the peaceful hamlet, life gets exciting. Below Saint-Martin the route crosses a 133 m pedestrian suspension bridge spanning a steep 30 m drop. From the famous Passerelle de la Grande Combe the view of the pyramids of Euseigne is extraordinary. The bizarre rock formations are up to 15 m high and under nature conservation protection. They are considered to be among the most significant geological sites in the Alps.
Shortly before the destination the hikers reach the Borgne River. It first flows through a high valley, then through the deep canyons of the Val d’Hérens until it finally joins the Rhone near Sion. Across a bridge and briefly uphill the trail leads to the village of La Luette, where it comes to its end.
