Overview
Intro
Cross-country skiing in the magical Lötschental Valley, with quaint barns all along the way. This relatively flat ski trail near Blatten, the valley's furthermost commune, twists and turns on both sides of the river Lonza past Eisten hamlet, with 3,000-meter peaks all around you.
Description
Blatten is the commune with the largest area in the Lötschental, and it is also the furthermost village in the valley. With its narrow alleyways, snug restaurants and blackened timber houses and barns, this village exudes an abundance of charm. Alongside intact villages amid pristine countryside, this district boasts plenty of peaks rising to 3,000 meters or more, such as the Bietschhorn – also known as the King of the Lötschental.
This circular trail begins just above the PostBus stop and the large car park. Warming up is the name of the game to begin with. The route climbs gently across the open terrain between Lonza and the hamlet of Eisten, where wooden houses bask on the sunny southern slopes.
Shortly before you cross the bridge over the Lonza river, the ascent will now be behind you. The river originates from the Lang Glacier at the end of the valley and flows into the Rhone near Gampel. At this point, the route turns and crosses the Blatten-Falfleralp trail, which leads to the Fafleralp further up the valley with a view of the Bietschhorn mountain range.
The way back to Blatten is slightly uphill, with the peaks of the Hockenhorn, Ferdenhorn and Wilerhorn that frame the entrance to the valley in view the entire time.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
