Calm Sea
A red-haired mermaid lies seductively on a rock in the middle of a calm sea. While she gazes attentively into the distance a pale triton glides through the water below her. The relationships between the two is difficult to interpret, there is a sinister tension over the masterfully painted scene. The connection between dream and reality, imagination and observation characterises the works by Arnold Böcklin, a famous representative of Symbolism.
