Jidai Matsuri is one of the three most important festivals in Kyōto, the former Japanese capital. It is closely associated with the Heian-jingū shrine, established at the same time as the festival, which is dedicated to two emperors: Kanmu, who relocated the capital to Kyōto, and Kōmei, who was the last emperor to reign there.
