“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.​” These were the words uttered by Neil Armstrong in July 1969 as he became the first man to walk on the surface of the moon. 50 years later, this milestone in space exploration is being commemorated across all four corners of the globe – and Switzerland is joining in the celebrations.

Fly me to the moon

Kunsthaus Zürich, 5 April to 30 June 2019.

Encompassing around 200 works of art, this exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich offers a fascinating insight into artists’ relationship with the moon. Starting with the age of romanticism, the exhibition then focuses predominantly on art from the post-war period. Historic facts are intertwined with legends and subjective creations as the artists grapple with topics such as topography, moonlight and shadow, media productions and weightlessness.

Fascination with the moon – a photographic journey

Swiss Foundation for Photography, 8 June to 6 October 2019. Fifty years after man first set foot on the moon, the Swiss Foundation for photography has compiled a photographic portfolio of this celestial body that has captured people’s imagination for centuries. Over the moon – 50th anniversary of the first moon landing

Museum Burghalde and other venues in Lenzburg. 50 years ago, an event captured the minds and imaginations of people around the world – we’re talking of course about the first moon landing. 2019 will play host to a whole range of celebratory events for young and old alike, including storytelling, music evenings, talks, guided tours and exhibitions all relating to the moon.

Capcom Go! – 50th anniversary of the first moon landing

Coming soon to the planetarium at the Swiss Museum of Transport, Lucerne. On 20 July 1969, millions of people sat glued to their television and radio sets to listen to the start of the Apollo 11 mission. “Capcom go!” This radio message from the mission control centre confirmed successful communication with the astronauts – thereby giving the go-ahead for the most exciting journey undertaken by man to date. This new planetarium show tells the story of the space race between the USA and the Soviet Union as the two countries battled it out to reach the moon first.
