Description
Zweisimmen, gateway to the world-famous Gstaad-Sannenland region, is the starting point for this stage of the Alpine Bike. The first seven kilometres to Saanenmöser follow the train tracks. The route climbs gently but steadily. You continue on the surfaced road until Schönried.
From the 13th century to 1555, Saanen belonged to the earldom of Gruyère. In 1312, the people of Saanen freed themselves by buying themselves free from tallage. This was an individual tax that had to be paid by serfs in the form of money, crops or dairy products. At this time, there were 170 family heads in Saanenland, and 84 families were subject to this tax.
You continue downhill slightly for around four kilometres to reach Gstaad. The car-free village, with its beautiful wooden chalets, is popular with celebrities and wealthy guests from around the world. Continuing along the Saane river, you reach the village of the same name. After a short climb and descent, you arrive in Rougemont. Surrounded by stunning mountains, this is a well-known vacation spot for nature fans.
Now comes the more demanding part of this stage. Until shortly before Rougemont, you were following a Cycling in Switzerland route. Now, the mountain biking section begins. The ascent covers around 550 metres of elevation. Gravel roads alternate with trails. The final stretch to Château d’Oex covers over 400 metres of downhill elevation on meadow paths, trails and individual fast-paced surfaced sections. Your destination for this tour is Château d’Oex. Its favourable microclimate has made it a mecca for hot air ballooning. An international competition is held here every January, and passenger flights can be booked all year round.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
