Nassegl Bike
Overview
Intro
The tour is named after the painter Giovanni Segantini, who spent several years living and working in Savognin. Some of his most famous work was done here. The bike route passes through this very area.
Description
The village vista of Savognin, the capital of Surses, is characterised by the three old churches with their towers. The area around the village is also impressive: it is set in rugged mountain ranges, steep gorges and hilly mountain meadows that are best explored on foot or by bike. The Nassegl Bike tour starts at the car park of Savognin Bergbahnen mountain railways. On the way through the village, not only do you walk across a medieval bridge, but in the footsteps of a world-famous painter too: Giovanni Segantini. The route passes the Sala Segantini art gallery as well as the home of the world-famous painter on the main road. Segantini and his family lived in Savognin from 1886 to 1894. This is where some of his most famous paintings were created, including «The two mothers» and «Ploughing».
Next starts the climb to Rudnal above Savognin. Various finds from the Roman and Bronze Ages were made near Rudnal. The trail then takes a sharp left again into the forest. Up and down through the forest and across small streams, you work your way up to the highest point of the tour, from where it also derives its name: Nassegl at the foot of Piz Mitgel. The place offers a view over the entire ski resort of Savognin. For an optional detour: right after Nassegl, take the road to Plang Begls, where refreshments are available. This road also leads past the Segantini memorial stone, which invites you to take a short break.
From Tussagn the pace quickens on the downhill over single trails and forest roads. Despite having so much fun on the trail, make sure you take the time to enjoy the view across the Surses region. It was Giovanni Segantini’s inspiration for his paintings. He was also called the “master of Alpine landscapes”. You can form a picture in this incredible area on the way back towards Savognin.
Tip: The tour is ideally suited for e-bikes. If you have no appetite for trails simply take the forest road back to Savognin.
