Between the hamlet of Rischinen and Aletschbord, you’ll experience nature at its most beautiful – via the hamlet of Egga with views into the valley, the trail continues until Holzji and the observation post. Once at Aletschbord, you can gaze in wonder at several four-thousand-metre peaks and the Great Aletsch Glacier.
Description
The starting point for this snowshoe outing is Blatten, an idyllic mountain village with typical sun-darkened wooden houses and Valais storehouses. Once Blatten is behind you, the route zigzags along the Bruchi stream before crossing it and continuing along to the hamlet of Egga. This small settlement already offers beautiful views into the valley. A huge lateral moraine was deposited here by the Great Aletsch Glacier. It created a lake, but this has now become moorland. The hamlet is nestled around the shores of the former lake. Impressively, the gables of the buildings mimic the gradients of the hillside.
Via Egga, the trail then leads to Holzji, at times on the moraine wall. Here, if you’re lucky, you may spot some local wildlife from the observation post. Information boards are dotted along the route describing the local flora and fauna. The route picturesquely winds its way through the sparsely wooded forest until it reaches a clearing, opening up onto a magnificent view of the Great Aletsch Glacier.
No less impressive is the panoramic view at the end destination of this snowshoe outing – Aletschbord with views of the UNESCO Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site and the Great Aletsch Glacier, the main landmarks of the region. Further into the horizon, your gaze will fall on Riederfurka with Villa Cassel opposite the glacier, and you can enjoy views stretching from the Rhône Valley to the Matterhorn. Aletschbord is home to Hotel Belalp, an imposing building from the Belle Époque. Here, you can replenish your energy before starting the journey back along the panoramic road from Aletschbord to the cable car.
