Intro
Alfred Huggenberger, dialect poet and farmer in Gerlikon. This trail combines the Mittelland path with the Thurtal and can be combined with various round trips. Worthy of particular attention on this route are the former Tänikon monastery, the «house of sayings» in Aawangen and the Gerlikon Church.

Description
This trail is named in honour of the writer Alfred Huggenberger who described the countryside and its inhabitants in his novels and poems and who gave serious or funny roles to many a fellow citizen in his popular plays. At the entrance to the village of Gerlikon you can see an attractive half-timbered house. This is where Alfred Huggenberger lived with his wife and daughter from 1908 until his death in 1960.
Starting in Frauenfeld, the trail goes through Oberwil and then, after a somewhat strenuous climb, you arrive in Gerlikon. Having climbed up around 150 metres the majority of the uphill sections are already behind you. In Gerlikon there are fantastic views over the Thur valley to the Seerücken. The trail continues to Aawangen, whose church was first mentioned in 1247 and later extended. The half-timbered house bearing inscriptions was built in 1755.
In Tänikon the Lords of Bichelsee founded the Tänikon Convent in 1247. After the closure of the convent the von Planta family took over the building in 1848 and turned it into a model agricultural business. Since 1969 Tänikon has been an agricultural research establishment for animal husbandry and agricultural machinery as well as an energy advisory centre. From Tänikon the trail runs along the base of the Haselberg through farmland. The trail is lined with standard trees and cattle meadows all the way to the finish of the trail in Balterswil.
