Chemin du Gruyère
Distance 11 km
Duration 3 h 15 min
Ascent 380 m
Hike along Lake Montsalvens and through the Jaunbach gorge. Walkers cross the Saane plain and follow mystic pathways to Greyerz (Gruyères) Castle, recognisable from afar. Temptations abound, with heavenly chocolate at Maison Cailler in Broc and legendary cheese in Gruyères (Pringy).
The hike route initially follows Lake Montsalvens, where a suspension bridge soars above a fjord-like inlet; after the dam, the route plunges into the spectacular Jaunbach gorge − an unforgettable experience. Wooden walkways, tunnels and rock galleries, little waterfalls and polished rocks make of this adventurous section a family-friendly excursion.
Located in the brand new visitors' centre in Broc (opened in April 2010), Maison Cailler is a company steeped in tradition, enticing its guests into the world of chocolate with the slogan "pure chocolate - pure emotion". Their tour lasts twenty minutes and ends there where it all begins - with making chocolate.
The little medieval town with its imposing 13th century castle is then visible already from afar. The route passes the pilgrimage chapel of Notre-Dame des Marches dating from 1636 and continues to "Le Pont qui branle", a wooden bridge, then up to the old town and famous castle of Gruyères.
Note: At the foot of the castle hill in Pringy, the "Maison du Gruyère" offers a tour of the cheese factory with a chance to get to know the aroma and taste of the cheese.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
