Prättigauer Höhenweg
Overview
Intro
The descent from the Carschina Hut to St. Antönien passes below the limestone cliffs of the Sulzfluh and Schijenflue. The area is a popular climbing paradise, and crystal-clear Partnunsee lake invites you to take a dip. Numerous scattered settlements and pastures are reminders of the Walser culture.
Description
The Carschina hut lies at an inhospitable 2,236 metres above sea level on a meadow full of boulders but with fantastic far-reaching views. With its excellent grip, the rock of the Dolomite-like mountains provides favourable conditions for climbing.
The trail begins with a descent towards the east into a wetland area where meadows replace the rocky ground. At the foot of the imposing Sulzfluh, the views over the Prättigau's peaks are breathtaking. The Sulzfluh is known for its four-kilometre cave system. Remains of the cave bear have been found here that are between 80,000 and 120,000 years old.
A narrow path leads across pastures and past beautiful alpine flora towards Schijenflue and Wiss Platte. At crystal-clear Partnunsee, nestled between limestone cliffs, large erratic boulders invite you to go climbing. At the hamlet of Partnun, the steepest part is behind you. Continue on the scenic path next to the Schanielabach stream to Rüti, where the Walser Trail separates from the Prättigau High Trail after a long while.
The path turns into an asphalt road and leads slightly downhill through a scenery of lush green hills. To the left and right, individual huts and houses, the typical Walser settlements, dot the slopes. The area was settled by Walsers as early as the 14th century and inhabited all year round. The short hike ends at the pretty late-Gothic church in St. Antönien.
