Suonenweg Brandalp–Eischoll
Overview
Intro
To hikers’ delight, both the «Alte Suon» and «Alte Eischlersuon» irrigation channels carry water throughout the summer months. Another highlight of the route is the view of the Bietschhorn in all its glory.
Description
While riding the Unterbäch – Brandalp chairlift, it’s worth looking back at the peaks opposite and the pretty Valais mountain village of Unterbäch. On arrival at the top station, follow the forest road to the left until the timber yard. The hiking trail enters the forest here and winds its way uphill to the Löübbach stream. Now there are just a few more metres of altitude to overcome to reach the gurgling Alte Suon, sometimes also known as the «Ginanzerin». The trees covered in lichen are a magical and peaceful sight. At the turning point on the forest road, the trail leaves the babbling water conduit behind.
Continue hiking down to the bridge and cross the Milibach stream at Breite Stäg. The next forest path on the right leads down a stepped trail to the Alte Eischlersuon. This channel is wilder and livelier, crossing patches of forest, meadows and open fields. In places, cows or sheep can drink straight from it. Not far from the trail stands a small chapel near the hamlet of Breitmattu, which is well worth a visit. The flat ground in Oberhäusern is a good place to rest and admire the magnificent panorama of the Bernese Alps, dominated by the Bietschhorn.
Although the end is not far away, the village of Eischoll can only be seen during the final section. A walk through this well-tended place is a fitting way to end this varied hike; among its beautiful features are the village square, the distinctive church and the view of the Bietschhorn. Eischoll is also home to the rare spring meadow saffron, which attracts hikers from far afield.
