Intro
This tour from Saanen leads over quiet country roads and allows you to discover a hidden gem: the Mittelberg Pass. The descent from the Jaun Pass is also worth a detour.
Description
From Saanen, you head towards Schönried before turning left towards Mittelberg Pass. The climb, which is steep in places, takes you on a scenic road through forests and pastures. A long descent leads to the village of Jaun in the Canton of Fribourg.
Ride with caution because the road is very narrow near the top. The ascent to Jaun Pass starts immediately. Although not as steep as Mittelberg Pass, its average gradient of 8.6% should not be underestimated. The following descent is the tour’s highlight – 8.5km on an excellent but winding road with spectacular views.
The return trip mainly follows the national bike route no. 9. Near Saanenmöser, two steep sections require one last effort before the final descent into Saanen.
Tip from the Grand Tours Project
Instead of passing through the tunnel on the way up to Jaun Pass, take a side road around the mountain and enjoy magnificent views of Mittelberg Pass.
