Witenwasseren Bike
Overview
Intro
The valley of Witenwasser out of Andermatt is a route that can also be tackled by beginners. This half day route is very varied and if you are looking for idyllic locations, remoteness and alpine flora then this will be for you.
Description
Starting in Andermatt, you reach firstly Hospental on a mainly flat part and then the smallest village of Switzerland. Zumdorf, which was and still is the «smallest village of Switzerland», is a proven Walser settlement and was historically an independent curate chaplain with a chapel, chaplain and school. Devastated by avalanches, Zumdorf united with Hospental in March 1851.
Further along the route, after Realp, you pass the train station of the nostalgic steam train Furka. With a little luck you will see the old steam trains, puffing smoke as they move towards the pass of Furka. From then on you bike on the old military road to the valley of Witenwasseren. The remote and idyllic valley is a true flower paradise (especially in spring). The protected countryside area is of regional importance and also shows a large number of small moors. The ultimate destination of the route is Oberstafel and lies at 2221 m above sea level at the foot of Piz Lucendro.
From Oberstafel via Realp you then bike back on the same track through the valley of Ursern all the way to Andermatt. The cosy restaurants and cafés in the popular winter sport resort in Andermatt invite you to take a well deserved break.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
