Zeneggen: Hike Along the Aqueducts
Overview
Intro
The houses of this mountain village are sprinkled across a large, sunny plateau above Visp, an ancient cultural landscape defined by open aqueducts and an extraordinary wealth of Alpine plants that have become rare elsewhere. This is Zeneggen in the Augstbord region.
A special treat is a visit to Zeneggen, which has rertained its rustic character of yore. Its buildings are sprinkled across a large, sunny plateau and linked together by open aquaducts that the locals call suonen. One can hike along the 12 kilometers of acqueducts, which bring water to the fileds and gardens of the individual farmers from brooks and sources higher up. Subsidized by the Swiss Landscape Foundation, the people of Zeneggen have kept up the suonen immaculately, as well as the typical hedgerows and the tree islands. the hike affords wonderful views onto the Bietschorn, the Saas Valley and the Matter Valley with their imposing peaks. Be sure to try to hike the easy panorama tour through shady forests to the Moosalp.
