Rundweg Flimserwald
Overview
Intro
On this short circular tour through the fairytale Flims forest you will gain some impressions of the landscape around Flims, which is shaped by rockslides. A unique view of the Rhine Gorge awaits you at Conn. This winter hiking trail is also suitable for novices and families.
Description
Head out from Flims Dorf across the Flem river, a tributary of the Anterior Rhine, to reach the last houses at Lieptgas, where the actual winter hike starts. Before the route dips into the snowy Flims Forest, you will cross the beautiful Rens forest glade. Winter hikers will be utterly enchanted by nature and the mystical aura of snowy spruces, hills and scattered boulders. The trail runs through the great forest shaped by the Flims Rockslide, one of the largest continuous forests in Graubünden. The light is subdued – until you see the snow crystals glittering in the sun on the meadows at Conn.
Here it’s worth taking a look from the “Il Spir” viewing platform, named after the Romansh word for “common swift”. Designed by the Chur architect Corinna Menn, it offers a 180° view over the “Swiss Grand Canyon”, the Ruinaulta Rhine gorge. This landscape, situated between Reichenau and Ilanz, is one of the most spectacular in Graubünden. Up to 300 metres high and stretching over 14 kilometres, the gorge is traversed by the Anterior Rhine.
After the lookout, the way back leads gently uphill, passing above Lake Cauma with its remarkably turquoise-coloured waters. Its name means “siesta lake”, because it was used in Roman times as a resting place by shepherds and their flocks. Today, the lake surrounded by a forest is a popular destination for day trips. The final section follows along the Conn rivulet to Flims Waldhaus and from there along the main road to Flims Dorf.
