Savage: Männlichen
Overview
Intro
The dead-end route that leads from Grindelwald to the Männlichen at alt. 2229 m is exhausting, narrow and utterly relentless. Yet awaiting the hardy rider are awe-inspiring views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
Description
The ascent to the Männlichen surely ranks amongst the most spectacular routes in Switzerland. Leaving Grindelwald and its chalets, you can see the north face of the Eiger while paragliders soar above pastures of cows.
There is little indication that the Männlichen, heaving into view after a brief section of woodland, will be calling on you to mobilise all your strength: although the road to the summit at alt. 2229 metres is metalled all the way – and closed to motorised traffic – it’s narrow, steep and relentless.
The incentive is the monumental view at the summit, which mercilessly and unrelentingly remains before you, challenging you to come closer with every turn of the pedal. It is the rawness of the surroundings that exerts the greatest pull on you.
Once arrived, exhaustion is replaced by a sense of reverence as you contemplate the three most breathtaking peaks of the Bernese Alps: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
