Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the metabolism of sugar is disrupted, leading to a permanently high level of sugar in the blood.
If diabetes is not treated, the organs and vessels suffer. A distinction is made between the rarer type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune condition and usually develops during childhood or adolescence. The much more common form is type 2 diabetes, which leads to insulin resistance over time. Risk factors include a genetic predisposition, being overweight and taking little exercise.
