Four collections – Poster, Design, Graphics and Applied Art – encompass more than 500,000 objects at the Museum für Gestaltung. Switzerland’s foremost museum of design and visual communication is also one of the leading institutions in Europe, known for its fascinating temporary exhibitions.
Le Corbusier, Max Bill, Herbert Matter, René Burri, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Freitag: in the fields of design and visual communication, Switzerland has long been a world leader. The Museum für Gestaltung is the sole institution in Switzerland to document the evolution of design through systematic collection since 1875; highlights include milestones in aesthetic and technical development since the beginning of industrialisation.
In the listed original building at Ausstellungsstrasse in the heart of Zurich, the museum shows design in all its facets: for the first time, the treasures of its major international collection are on permanent display in this unique setting, coupled with exhibitions on changing themes. It is the perfect place to spend some time and discover outstanding Swiss design. In the heart of the vibrant hip district of Zurich-West, the Museum für Gestaltung is opening its annex, the Toni-Areal. With changing exhibitions, it is creating a connection to the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) on the campus, with experimental projects and observations on current design debates. The show depot can be visited as part of guided tours.
