Chasseron
Intro
The mountain Le Chasseron lies at 1,607m in the Jura mountains of the Canton of Vaud, roughly ten kilometres northwest of Yverdon-les-Bains. It is part of the southeasternmost chain of the folded Jura, which falls away sharply to the Swiss plateau.
The southeastern side of the mountain falls relatively gently to the high terrace of Les Rasses and Bullet, located at an average 1,200m, with the steep southern slope of the Jura starting just below. On the northern side of the mountain is a cirque, where water has broken off the hard top layer of the Chasseron limestone.
On the opposite side of the cirque are Roches Blanches at 1,470m, which straddle the border between the cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel. Le Chasseron is forested up to a height of around 1,400 to 1,500m, above which are vast mountain pastures. The southeastern slope of Le Chasseron is used for skiing in winter and there are several ski lifts in the area of Les Rasses and Sainte-Croix. A mountain restaurant is perched on the summit of Le Chasseron, where you can stay the night. On clear days, the mountain offers panoramic views of the Savoy Alps, Valais Alps, Bernese Alps all the way to the Säntis.
