Intro

Mountain biking is officially allowed on Graubünden's hiking trails. Because of the different needs of hikers and bikers, Graubünden has established a few simple rules. The slogan “Nett, suuber & parat” (Nice, clean & at the ready) promotes peaceful coexistence on the trails. Mountain bike world champion and Olympic champion Nino Schurter is a celebrity ambassador.

Graubünden is a paradise for hikers. Experience the mountain world on 11,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails through the Alpine canton. For those who prefer travelling on two wheels, the hiking trails may also be officially used with mountain bikes or e-mountain bikes — unless otherwise marked.

Different needs and speeds can sometimes make narrow paths seem a little too small. There are a few rules to follow in order for hikers and mountain bikers to get the most out of their outdoor recreation:

Mountain bikers:

  • Make your presence known early by ringing the bell
  • Give priority to hikers
  • Pass at walking pace or dismount briefly

Hikers:

  • Know the right of way
  • Move aside if space allows
  • Do not obstruct bikers unnecessarily

In addition, the usual rules apply to protect yourself and nature:

  • Take any waste away with you
  • Close gates behind you
  • Bikers should brake without locking the rear wheel
  • Inform yourself before the trip and plan the tour
  • Take along suitable equipment and clothing
  • Prepare for minor emergencies
