Eggberge–Ruogig Trail
Overview
Intro
From Eggbergen, an alpine terrace below Rophaien and Schön Chulm, snowshoers can trek through delightful scenery towards Hüenderegg. The reward awaiting them there is a tremendous view of the Urner mountain scenery.
Description
High above the floor of the Urner valley and Altdorf, the cantonal capital, lies the sunny alpine terrace called Eggberge. The hamlet, which faces southwest, lies at the entrance to the Schächental and can be reached by a leisurely cable-car ride.
From the mountain station, the posted snowshoe trail first heads steeply upwards through varied scenery. Snowshoers have to ascend over 400 metres to enjoy the view from Hüenderegg. It is worth taking a break before you descend: from here you can admire Lake Uri and a variety of peaks – including the Schärhorn, the Rophaien, the Gross Windgällen or the Uri-Rotstock between the Engelberg valley and Lake Lucerne. It makes all the effort worthwhile!
The descent runs in a semicircle over a ridge via the idyllic lake Fleschseeli and the meadow Chalberweid onto Ruogig. Take care here when there is a risk of avalanches. From Ruogig, hikers ride down two sections of the small cableway to the village of Bürglen, where William Tell, Switzerland’s national hero, is said to have lived. The PostBus brings snowshoers back to the start of the trail via the valley station of the Flüelen–Eggberge cableway.
