Three-day hike on the Via Glaralpina
Overview
Intro
Breathtaking views of the Glarus Alps, the Martinsloch rock hole and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – all this awaits you during a three-day hiking experience on the Via Glaralpina.
The Via Glaralpina is a one-of-a-kind nature experience for hiking enthusiasts. The trail connects 20 peaks, goes past more than 30 mountain huts, hotels and inns, and is broken down into 19 stages. Routes indicated by red/white and blue/white waymarkers guide hikers from lush Alpine valleys up to mountain landscapes and even the glaciers of the Glarus region. Stages 14, 15 and 16 in particular will set hiking enthusiasts’ pulses racing – a unique three-day hike offering unforgettable views as a reward.
Stage 14 of the Via Glaralpina can be started in Elm (we recommend arriving the day before and staying in the Hotel Bergführer or Hotel Elmer). At the far end of Elm, the hike leads to the historic Panix Pass, through which the Russian General Suvorov and his army once fled from their enemy. The Panix Pass is a wonderful spot for a short breather at the mountain hut before following the blue/white waymarkers of the Alpine hiking trail towards the Bündner Vorab peak at 3,028 metres above sea level, the highest point of the Via Glaralpina. The final destination at the end of this impressive day of hiking is the Martinsmadhütte SAC mountain hut above Tschinglenalp.
After a cosy night in the hut, hikers awake the following morning to the sun’s rays before embarking on stage 15 down to Tschinglenalp. From here, they can enjoy astounding views of the Martinsloch rock hole in the midst of the famous Tschingelhörner chain of peaks. After a short rest at the Tschinglen-Wirtschaft inn, the trail continues through the remarkable Tschinglen Gorge back down to Elm Töniberg. This is followed by a challenging ascent to the Fanenstock summit, which boasts magnificent views down into the valley. Weissenberge – the final destination of that day’s stage – is already visible from here. Once again, strong hiker’s calves will be called for. On arrival, hikers can relax and recharge their batteries for the next day in the homely Berggasthaus Edelwyss guesthouse.
It’s a dawn start for stage 16 of the Via Glaralpina. From Weissenberge, the trail takes hikers up to the Sunnenhöreli summit. They then follow a spectacular Alpine ridge to the Gulderstock, which offers incredible views into the far distance. Surrounded by the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona – a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site – the route continues over the geologically impressive Gipsgrat ridge to the Wissmeilen Pass. The descent to Engi down in the valley goes via the Mülibachtal ski hut; those who want to experience even more of the Via Glaralpina can take advantage of the hut’s cosy beds before tackling the next delightful stages of the impressive long-distance hiking trail through the Glarnerland.
